Overview

The Garden in the Woods is on a one plus acre lot containing a one story stone ranch house built in 1956, with an addition put on in 1987.  The front door faces south which is great feng shui but rough on paint.  The lot is mostly shaded by mature oak trees.  The back half of the lot is several feet lower than the front and heavily wooded.  Grazing by deer and rabbits is a HUGE problem.  There are many plants that are regularly eaten back to nubs at some point during the winter, including some that aren’t usually attractive to deer like liriope.

The previous owner lived in the house for over 30 years, and did minimal landscaping on most of the lot.  She did plant a ton of forsythia cuttings along the East Edge which mostly don’t get enough sun to bloom.  The front yard was professionally landscaped, perhaps at some point in the 1980’s.  The lawn may have been reseeded in Fall 2008 before we purchased in Spring 2009, but the soil is poor, compacted and shaded, so it’s hard to tell.
